This years pumpkins

Were carved last night.  Here they are:

Mine is the tree and my sister’s is the ghost and pumpkin.

The front door.  Cooper’s pumpkins are the ones with silly faces.  Still too young to carve so he got a kit where you just stick the pieces into the pumpkin.

Tid bits

I find I go through the day and have these “Oh, I should blog that” moments but then when I actually sit down to type, I draw a blannk.  Maybe I should join that Novemeber challenge that Daffy suggested to make myself blog daily.

Anyway, here’s a completely assorted post.

———————————————————————————-

I’m booked on November 12th to have lasik eye surgery and I CAN NOT wait!  Glasses be gone.  I’ve been wearing glasses since grade 4 and have gone through periods of hating them and periods of loving them.  My eyes get too dry for contacts so I only wear them for very special occasions cause I can’t stand to have them in my eyes longer than a few hours.  In the last few months though, wearing glasses has become an annoyance.  They get bent out of shape, dirty and are always slipping down my nose (from being bent out of shape no doubt) way too much through out the day and it’s annoying.  I’m very nervous about having my eyes poked and prodded but it can’t be much worse than all the tests I had to do to see if I was even a candidate.  The procedure itself is only a few minutes each eye and the recovery is really quick.  I should be able to drive after 48 hrs.  So, November 12th is the day and it can’t come fast enough.

Halloween is this week and I’m just getting organized now.  My sister and I started carving pumpkins every year so now it’s tradition. Every year we try to do better/different than the year before.  Stay tuned for pictures. We’re carving tomorrow and I still need to find what I want to carve.  These were last year’s:

Hers is on the left, mine on the right.

Lastly because I’m now out of time - I have to find party game ideas for a party I’m having on Saturday. It’s not a halloween party so no themed games.  I’m sure I’ll have no problem getting ideas once I start searching.  Oh and need decorations too. It’s a party to celebrate my bother in law getting his PhD.  Huge accomplishment therefore a huge, fun party should be had to celebrate ;) .

How’s that for assortment?

Why?

I’ve been getting asked “why” by Cooper for quite some time now and have been pretty good with managing my way through the ones that I don’t necasarily know the answers to.  He’s just over 3 1/2 so I keep the answers as short as possible and truthful.  But he’s getting into some now that I find a bit thrown by in how to explain it.  Like “Why are we family?” came out tonight.  He’s been going on for quite some time now about how we’re all best friends and we’ve talked a lot about who’s who in the family. Grandma and Grandpa are daddy’s mom and dad, Uncle J is daddy’s brother and Aunti L is mommy’s sister. Nanny is mommy’s mommy etc. But tonight he asked Why are we a family? What makes us a family? I tried to keep it to Mommy and Daddy got married and had him and Carter and that makes us a family. Mommy and Daddy are husband and wife and him and Carter are brothers and they are both our sons.  He was good (for now) with this answer but as I left his room I thought …. that wasn’t a great explanation.  There’s blended families, adopted families, families with 2 dads or 2 moms, step families etc. I felt that my explanation was too narrow for how it really is so what does make us a family?  Maybe I should have said something more along the lines of we all live together and love each other. But then Auntie L  and Uncle Jer and everyone don’t live with us and they’re still family so….  a bit stuck again.  Maybe I’m making more of it then I need to.  He’s 3 1/2 and getting his sense of importance and place in a big family.  My mom was 1 of 14 and my dad was 1 of 5.  Hubby and I are both very close to the family that lives close (aunts, uncles, cousins etc) so the house is always full of “family members”.  But, the definition of family is so broad that maybe I should just say “because we all love eachother and are there for one another”.  That seems more like it doesn’t it?

It’s always in hindsight that we get the clear answers we were looking for in the moment isn’t it?

Reminder

Ohhh.. it’s almost halloween and that also means the clocks go back.  I hate time changes.  Messes the kids up and it means it will be dark here at 5pm.

But with the time change comes the reminder to get the house safe and ready for winter. Change batteries in the fire alarms, make sure the fire extinguishers are charged and in an accessible areas and get the fleece bed sheets on the bed.  MMmmmm… flannel bed sheets. My favorite.  I bought 2 extra fire alarms this past week to put in the boys bedrooms since they sleep with their doors closed. I also found out that the only fire extinguisher I had in the hosue was an old, needs charging one in the garage!! Yikes.  So off i went and bought 3 more. One for the kitchen, upstairs and downstairs.  Fire alarms checked and batteries replaced and flannel sheets on the bed. What a cozy sleep I had last night!  I love waking up to the air being crisp and me under all my warm, soft blankets.

Oh and found some great parenting resources that I thought I’d link to if you’re into democratic parenting.  Not too sure if I have many mums of little ones stop my way but they’re  great web sites for democratic parenting.

you can watch her show here. They have it sorted by topic which is fantastic. You can watch only the ones that pertain to your situation…

Hrm

I have one boy sleeping and the other just left to go watch his 2nd cousin’s hockey game.  This is a first for us.  Him leaving home to go somewhere on a weekend without us going too.  We shut the door and looked at each other with question in our eyes trying to decide what to do with these free few hours we have.  Of course there’s always the never ending to do list but these few hours came kind of unexpectedly. Almost like a treat. Therefore I want to do something that’s a treat to myself.  But there’s even so much choice in that. Do I go read my book, work out with hubby, take a bath, get out in the garden…….  ?  Maybe a little bit of each of them…?

What would you do with an extra few hours given that all your chores and “to do’s” were done all ready?

My favorite season

Is here…..

This was taken today while driving to let the boys have a nap.  They had their first school field trip to a local farm in which I volunteered. It was absolute mayham and chaos. We ended up leaving early (that goodness I brought my own car) and going for a drive to inhale and appreciate some of falls beauty. And so they could sleep.  It was a great change of pace for me from the chaotic morning to driving alone while my boys slept.  I love fall. I love the colors. I love the temperature. I love the nesting feeling of preparing the house for winter.
